Anyone planning a wedding will sooner or later ask themselves the same question:
How much does a wedding actually cost?
Unfortunately, the answer is as unsatisfactory as it often is:
"It depends."
And that's actually true. Because between a relaxed garden wedding with friends and family and a classic wedding celebration with venue, catering, DJ, photography and a humanist ceremony, there can easily be a difference of tens of thousands of euros.
Nevertheless, nobody wants to plan a wedding without at least a rough idea of the budget.
Therefore, this article will give you a realistic overview of the costs that can arise at a wedding with 50 to 70 guests, which items are often underestimated, and where money can be saved without compromising the celebration.
Why the question is so difficult to answer
When people ask:
"How much does a wedding cost?"
They often mean completely different things.
For some, marriage means:
Registry Office
nice meal with family
cozy celebration
For others, this naturally includes:
wedding dress
Men's suit
Wedding rings
Wedding venue
Catering
Photographer
Music
wedding cake
free wedding ceremony
various service providers
Both are weddings.
And that's precisely why no one can seriously say:
"A wedding costs exactly 17,346 euros."
The better question is:
How would you like to celebrate?
Because that ultimately determines the price.
What many couples underestimate regarding wedding costs

Most people quickly become aware of the major cost factors:
Location
Eat
drinks
Clothing
Photographer
It's often the many small things in between that end that end up being surprisingly expensive.
For example:
Overnight stays for guests
Midnight snacks
additional drink requests
Party favors
Stationery
Shuttle service
childcare
spontaneous additional requests
Each individual item initially seems manageable.
However, this quickly adds up to a four-figure sum that was not even considered in the original planning.
The biggest cost factors of a wedding
The prices mentioned are intended as a guideline. Depending on the region, number of guests, and desired level of service, individual items may be significantly higher or lower. And as with many things, there's practically no upper limit to how much you can spend on a wedding.
Cost | Realistic costs |
Location | €1,000–€5,000 |
Catering & drinks (50–70 guests) | €4,000–12,000 |
wedding dress | €800–3,000 |
Alterations by a tailor | €50–500 |
Men's suit | €300–1,500 |
Makeup artist | €150–500 |
Barber | €80–300 |
Wedding rings | €500–€5,000 |
Photographer | €1,500–4,000 |
Singer | €300–1,500 |
Independent wedding officiant | €800–2,000 |
Wedding planner | €1,000–€5,000 |
DJ | €800–3,500 |
Live band | €2,000–€6,000 |
Flowers & Decoration | €500–3,000 |
wedding cake | €300–1,000 |
Party favors | €100–800 |
Stationery | €100–800 |
Magician or show act | €500–2,000 |
Live painting | €980–2,400 |
Overnight stays for guests | €0–3,000 |
Other & Buffer | €500–3,000 |
What resources might your environment already possess?
When couples discuss wedding costs, they often think of service providers first. However, it can sometimes be worthwhile to look within their own circle of friends and family.
Does anyone have a nice vintage car?
Do you know a seamstress?
Does anyone have experience in catering?
Are there any educators who could put together a great children's program?
Does anyone play in a band?
Of course, no one should feel like they're working at a wedding. At the same time, celebrations where family and friends contribute their skills often have a unique charm.
Not only do they save money, but they often make the celebration more personal.
A realistic example calculation for 60 guests
To ensure the question doesn't remain theoretical, let's look at an example wedding .

Location: €2,500
Catering & drinks: €6,000
Wedding dress: €1,500
Suit: €700
Makeup artist: €250
Hairdresser: €150
Wedding rings: €1,500
Photographer: €2,000
Independent wedding officiant: €1,200
DJ: €1,500
Flowers & decoration: €1,000
Wedding cake: €500
Live painting: €1,500
Party favors & stationery: €600
Other & Buffer: €1,500
Total amount: €20,400
And this isn't even a luxury wedding.
A band instead of a DJ, an additional show act, overnight accommodation for guests, or an exclusive location can quickly push the cost of the same wedding into the range of 25,000 euros and beyond.
What does a wedding with 50 to 70 guests really cost?
In my experience, most weddings fall roughly within these price ranges:
Budget-conscious and creatively planned
€8,000–12,000
Classic wedding with multiple service providers
€15,000–32,000
Elaborate wedding with exclusive location, band and extensive supporting program
€35,000 and more
Of course, these aren't hard and fast rules. There are wonderful celebrations that fall below these budgets, and equally many weddings that cost significantly more.
What guests actually remember later
After attending many weddings, I've gained an impression:
Surprisingly, the conversations in the evening rarely revolve around the budget.
Hardly anyone says:
"But they spent 1,000 euros more on flowers."
Far more often, other things stick in the mind:
special encounters
personal ideas
lovely details
shared experiences
Surprises
The cake buffet provided by family and friends.
The name tags come from a workshop for people with disabilities.
The vintage car from a circle of friends.
The singer during the wedding ceremony.
The little things that reveal who the couple really is.
Many of these memories cost little or nothing – and yet remain in the memory for a long time.
Conclusion
A wedding with 50 to 70 guests often costs between 15,000 and 35,000 euros today, but depending on the concept, it can be significantly cheaper or more elaborate.
More important than the exact number, however, is the question of which elements are truly important to you.
A truly great wedding isn't about spending as much money as possible. It's about the celebration reflecting you and feeling like you.
And that's precisely why it's worth consciously allocating your budget where it makes the biggest difference for you.
