How much does a wedding painter cost?

The answer starts somewhere at a few hundred euros and can go up into the four-figure range. That sounds like a pretty wide range at first.

But not all "wedding painters" are the same.

Perhaps you'd like 50 small portraits for your guests. Perhaps you envision one large painting of your wedding. Perhaps you'd like to unite your entire party in a single picture.

Let's take a look at the approximate cost of the different options – and, more importantly, what do you get for it?

Live painting with guest illustrations

Imagine your guests are sitting at the champagne reception, standing at the bar or still dancing on the dance floor – and somewhere in the middle, one small work of art after another is gradually being created.

With live painting, your guests are illustrated right at the wedding. Depending on the style, the pictures are created in just a few minutes, and the finished portraits can then be taken home as personal wedding favors. It's precisely this mix of art, entertainment, and a personal gift that makes it so special.

Prices for smaller weddings start at around €450–€700. For 30 to 50 guests, many offers are in the range of €900–€2,000. Larger parties or longer events can cost €2,000–€3,000 or more. Examples on the market range from €450 for up to 20 guests to €2,720 for 80 guests.

My live painting sessions in color and black and white start at €980 for 30 guests. For 50 guests, the price is €1,650, and for 80 guests, it's €2,400. Travel and accommodation costs may apply.

Live painting in black and white

Black and white is a rather unique thing in live painting.

The portraits are taken directly at the wedding, but completely without color. This gives them a minimalist, modern, and quite cool look.

And although live painting is becoming more popular, the black and white version is still extremely rare. With me, it costs the same as the color live painting.

Large live wedding painting

Now, many small pictures become one large work of art.

In the classic live wedding painting, work on a painting on canvas begins during your wedding, which is then completed afterwards in the studio.

For example, you can have yourselves portrayed with your location and some important people – or a much more elaborate scene with a large part of the wedding party.

And this is precisely where the price range becomes interesting.

For around €450–650 you can find smaller and less elaborate paintings: for example, a smaller format with the couple and a suggested background, or a deliberately loosely styled scene.

In the range of approximately €1,000–1,800, it becomes more elaborate: larger canvases, more people, more details and a more elaborate background are possible.

From around €2,000 upwards, this can become a really large-scale image – with a larger format, many people, a detailed location, and significantly more work. High-quality offers for large-scale images, for example, start at €2,500 or €3,200.

The techniques used also vary. Acrylic and mixed media on canvas are common, while other artists work with oil or on paper, for example.

The exciting part is that you can't just "have a wedding photo painted." It creates a unique work of art that reflects your wedding as interpreted by an artist .

Mobile live painter

The mobile live painter is less about a large, perfectly executed painting.

Instead, the artist moves through the wedding, quickly capturing individual scenes: a couple dancing, the family at the table, friends at the bar, or any small moment that is happening.

The result is usually quick, loose sketches or drawings. This allows for capturing many different moments of a day. Artists offer such documentary live drawings, for example, covering everything from the civil ceremony to the first dance and even the bouquet toss.

For around €500–900, such an offer would get you, for example, a shorter period of support with a manageable number of drawings.

For around €1,000–1,800, this can turn into a longer-term arrangement, resulting in significantly more scenes.

For €2,000–€3,000 and more, correspondingly longer support services, many individual drawings and more extensive documentation are possible.

One particularly beautiful option is, for example, an artist's book: During the wedding, numerous quick original drawings are created, which then remain with the couple as a coherent documentation of the day.

Group photo

Something happens here that is missing in many individual guest illustrations:

In the end, you will have a great work of art that unites your entire society.

With individual guest illustrations, each guest takes their own picture home. With a group photo, on the other hand, you get the whole party together in a single artwork.

And not all people even have to have actually been at the wedding.

Even grandma, who unfortunately couldn't come, your best friend who lives abroad, or a beloved pet can be integrated into the picture using photos.

Depending on size, number of people, and complexity, hand-painted group portraits typically cost between €500 and €1,500 for small to medium-sized groups. For very large groups or particularly elaborate compositions, the price can be significantly higher.

In my group portraits, the individual people are combined into a single artwork and painted by hand. For 40 people, the cost is approximately €650.

Wedding painting at the registry office

Is it actually possible to bring a wedding painter along to the registry office?

Yes – and that doesn't necessarily mean that someone has to spend two hours working on a single [item] during the wedding ceremony.

Canvas is in place.

A special variation is an artistic reportage of a civil ceremony. Several stages of the appointment are recorded live and then combined into a coherent little art reportage.

This is still a real niche market, though. My research has turned up very few comparable services in exactly this form. More commonly, you find mobile caricature artists who sketch individual moments during the civil ceremony, the champagne reception, or the subsequent couple's photoshoot. For example, some packages include around 30 original drawings collected throughout the day in an artist's book.

My registry office wedding reportage is structured as a fixed package: 5 watercolor images are created, showing different stages of your registry office appointment, and are presented as a beautiful reportage at the end – ready to take with you on the same day.

Hand-painted place cards

A seat card can, of course, simply tell someone where they should sit.

Or it can also be a small work of art.

Hand-painted place cards create an individual portrait for each guest. So, instead of 60 identical cards on the tables, there are 60 unique little pieces.

For hand-painted or individually drawn portrait place cards, a realistic price range is approximately €10–30 per piece. Depending on the technique, format, and level of detail, higher prices are also possible.

My hand-painted watercolor place card costs €15.

Art from photography

Wedding art doesn't have to be created live at the celebration.

You can also take a photo that is particularly important to you and have it turned into a hand-painted work of art. This could be a couple's portrait, a family picture, a group picture, or even a combination of several photos.

Here, the price range is particularly wide. A small, hand-painted portrait in A5 format on paper can start at around €70–150. For larger formats and more elaborate subjects, €250–500 is realistic; for very large canvases, many people, or particularly detailed work, prices can reach €800, €1,000, or considerably more. Commissioned oil paintings, for example, are offered starting at €500, with larger and more elaborate works costing significantly more.

Size also makes a significant difference: a small A5 portrait is a different task than a large A2 artwork. In addition, there's the number of people, the background, and the level of detail required in the subject matter.

At All for Love, for example, current artworks based on photographs start at €70 for a 15 × 21 cm print. The price increases accordingly for larger formats and more complex motifs.

How much does a wedding painter cost?

Now the large range can be better understood.

A small, hand-painted portrait can start at under €100. A collection of guest illustrations for a larger wedding can easily reach four figures. A large, detailed live painting can also cost several thousand euros.

The name "wedding painter" therefore describes less of a specific product than a whole range of different possibilities.

And that's precisely what makes wedding painting so exciting: you can not only ask yourselves which picture you ultimately want. You can also consider how the art should become part of your wedding.

A person wearing glasses (Marius) smiles at a desk with a camera in a rustic room with a brick wall and lamps.

Should she give your guests a unique, personal keepsake? Should she provide entertainment during the celebration? Should the entire party be gathered in one large picture? Or would you like to capture a special moment as a large work of art?

Which of these options were completely new to you – and which idea do you find most exciting? Feel free to write it in the comments. And if you're currently looking for wedding art yourself, you can of course browse through the various offerings from All for Love.
